Do you remember when was the Battle of Kulikovo?

In what year was the Battle of Kulikovo? Not every our compatriot can immediately recall this. But this event is one of the brightest pages of Russian history. Remember, in what year was the Battle of Kulikovo and with what its consequences are connected, is useful already because in the mass consciousness of each people the presence of such heroic episodes is necessary. After all, it forms a national identity, rallying the people through common ideas about the past and future aspirations. At the same time, some modern historians question the real significance of this battle (and they certainly know exactly in which year the Kulikovo battle was, which served as its prerequisites, and what the results were). Let's remember it all!

Background of the battle

By the second half of the XIV century. The Golden Horde is experiencing an increasingly distinct decline. Like many fairly large-scale education of the Middle Ages, the state of the descendants of Genghis Khan faces internal internal strife and, as a result, fragmentation. Civil strife and strife in the Horde lead one of the temniki troops - Mamaia to state power. Against this background, a number of Russian principalities are reviving. Moscow is gradually becoming their new center. Mamai, not being a direct descendant of Genghis Khan, did not have a formal right to tribute from the Slavs. This was the reason for the towering Moscow to try its strength against yesterday's patrons. The first attempt to break the Moscow principality came in 1378. However, it ended in failure, and Mamaia's armies were defeated in the battle on the Vozha river. In what year was the Battle of Kulikovo? Already two years after these events. The next reason to put the princes in reserve (and for the princes - to strengthen their own political freedom) was found when Dmitry Donskoy refused to increase the size of the collected tribute for the Tatar khans. The demon again begins to gather the army.

Events of the Battle of Kulikovo

On the eve of the battle, Dmitry Donskoy could have had a national team of several principalities at once, the total number of which, according to modern estimates, was from 50 to 100 thousand people. In the army of Mamaia, in fact, the Horde forces acted, as well as mercenaries (Yas, Genoese and others). It numbered 60-150 thousand people. The general battle happened in September 1380 - Kulikovo battle at the mouth of the Nepryadva and Don rivers. Medieval sources briefly describe the course of the clash itself, reporting only that it was preceded by a battle between the two strongest heroes on both sides, Peresvet and Chelubey. However, this mention is not everywhere. So, it's probably just a beautiful fiction of the chroniclers. The very same general battle, they paid little attention, saying only that the princely generals won the victory, thanks to military cunning: they managed to lure the Tatar cavalry to themselves, To divide it with the rest of the horde and strike her from the rear. After that, the remaining Horde were pushed to the river and finally killed.

The Consequences of the Battle on Kulikovo Field

As a result of the victory, the Russian princedoms did not cease to pay tribute. They continued to do this for another hundred years. However, the historic significance of this battle lies in the fact that the Moscow principality was not crushed at the stage of its formation, which allowed him to continue the victorious step, in the future to rally all Russian lands around himself and to end the yoke.
