After the revolution of 1917 and the subsequent civil war, the territory of Kazakhstan was transformed several times. In 1991, the Kazakh SSR disconnected from the Soviet Union and became an independent and independent republic.

Special money is issued in denominations of 20, 100, 1000, 5000, 10000 tenge. Silver and gold exist in denominations from 1 to 100 tenge. Many of the 20 and 50 tenge jubilee years are made of nickel silver.

In 2016 on July 29, the Kazakh National Bank issued a new special gold and silver coin worth 500 tenge and 100 tenge from nickel silver. The coins are part of a series dedicated to Abulkhair Khan.
